The Thames and Greenwich Hospital by moonlight, c.1854-65 (oil on canvas)
7339093 The Thames and Greenwich Hospital by moonlight, c.1854-65 (oil on canvas) by Pether, Henry (fl.1828-62); 61x91.5 cm; National Maritime Museum, London, UK; (add.info.: Creator: Henry Pether
A painterly interpretation of the River Thames and Greenwich Hospital by moonlight. Like his father, Abraham 'Moonlight' Pether of Chichester, Henry Pether specialized in moonlight scenes. He was famed for his views of the Thames and this painting of Greenwich Hospital, seen from the west, is a particularly fine example of his topographical work. The foreground and architectural details are carefully studied and delineated, and the moonlight reflected from the Thames illuminates the scene. On the far left of the picture, beyond shipping moored in the river, lies the Isle of Dogs with the chimney of the Cumberland Mills oil-seed factory, which was demolished in the 1980s.); © National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, London

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning painting by Henry Pether captures the beauty of the River Thames and Greenwich Hospital under the enchanting glow of moonlight. Specializing in moonlit scenes like his father before him, Pether's skillful interpretation showcases his mastery of light and shadow. The meticulous attention to detail in both the foreground and architectural elements brings this scene to life, while the reflection of moonlight on the river adds a magical touch.
Greenwich Hospital, seen from the west, is depicted with precision and care, highlighting Pether's talent for capturing topographical accuracy. The Isle of Dogs can be seen in the distance, along with the distinctive chimney of Cumberland Mills oil-seed factory - a now demolished landmark that adds historical significance to this piece.
As one gazes upon this painting, they are transported back in time to a serene evening along the Thames, where ships gently sway in the water and moonbeams dance across its surface. Pether's ability to evoke emotion through his artistry is truly remarkable, making this work a timeless masterpiece that continues to captivate viewers centuries later.
