7341828 John Adams, alias John Wilkinson, Greenwich Pensioner boatswain's mate of the 'Agamemnon' (watercolour) by Cruikshank, Frederic (1800-68); 23.9x18.6 cm; National Maritime Museum, London, UK; (add.info.: Creator: Frederick Cruikshank
This is one of two versions of this portrait of the former boatswain's mate (1793-96) of Nelson's 'Agamemnon', the other larger watercolour (Greenwich Hospital Collection) being PAH3992. That shows the full figure and the sitter with a rather defeated expression. The sharper truculence here perhaps more accurately reflects his unwillingness to sit for Cruikshank at which the artist's related letter (see below) seems to hint.); © National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, London

This watercolor portrait captures the essence of John Adams, also known as John Wilkinson, a Greenwich Pensioner and former boatswain's mate of Nelson's 'Agamemnon'. Painted by Frederick Cruikshank in the 19th century, this artwork showcases Adams with a sharp and truculent expression, reflecting his unwillingness to sit for the artist. The intricate details in the painting bring out the character and history of this distinguished individual.
Adams served on board the 'Agamemnon' from 1793 to 1796, making him a part of naval history during that era. His service alongside Admiral Nelson adds an extra layer of significance to this portrait.
