Berthe Morisot, c. 1873 (oil on fabric)
499494 Berthe Morisot, c.1873 (oil on fabric)
by Manet, Edouard (1832-83); 91.12x76.52 (framed) 74.00x60.00 (unframed) cm; Cleveland Museum of Art, OH, USA; (add.info.: This painting depicts the Impressionist painter Berthe Morisot (1841-1895), who began working closely with Edouard Manet around 1868. She married Manets brother Eugene in 1874. Manet painted Morisots portrait several times, at first presenting her in static poses with neatly styled hair. About 1872 he began painting her in more momentary, fleeting states. In this painting Morisot appears to be moving, her hair disheveled as she throws a furtive glance to the side. Manets sketchy brushwork gives the painting a daring unfinished look, suggesting the tempo of modern life. Morisots pensive, nervous expression suggests that Manet was sympathetic to her struggle for recognition at a time when women were not expected to pursue professional careers. Indeed, at the time the portrait was painted, Morisots parents were urging her to settle down to a more conventional life.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures Berthe Morisot, a prominent Impressionist painter, in a moment of movement and contemplation. Painted by Edouard Manet around 1873, the portrait showcases Morisot's disheveled hair and furtive glance to the side, suggesting a sense of urgency and modernity. Manet's brushwork adds an unfinished touch to the painting, reflecting the fast-paced tempo of contemporary life. The artist's choice to depict Morisot in more fleeting states marks a shift from his earlier static portrayals of her with neatly styled hair. It is evident that Manet sympathized with Morisot's struggle for recognition as a female artist during a time when women were discouraged from pursuing professional careers. At the time this portrait was created, Morisot's parents were pressuring her to conform to societal expectations and settle down into a conventional life. However, through this artwork, Manet pays tribute to her determination and ambition by capturing her pensive and nervous expression. Displayed at the Cleveland Museum of Art in Ohio, USA, this oil on fabric masterpiece is part of Leonard C. Hanna Jr. 's bequest collection. As we gaze upon this striking image captured by Bridgeman Images' lens, we are reminded not only of Berthe Morisot's significant contributions to art history but also of the challenges faced by women artists striving for recognition in their respective fields.
