EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a moment of intrigue and preoccupation in the animal kingdom. Inspired by Kenneth Grahame's beloved novel, "Wind in the Willows". Arthur Rackham brings to life a scene where field-mice and harvest-mice gather together. Though their interactions remain civil, there is an air of distraction that hangs over them. In this rural setting, amidst lush greenery and towering trees, the mice seem lost in their own thoughts. Fishing nets are strewn about, fishing rods leaning against trunks as if forgotten mid-action. Baskets filled with fruits lie untouched while an umbrella stands open but abandoned. The rat at the center of attention appears deep in contemplation, its gaze fixed on something unseen beyond our view. The water vole nearby seems equally absorbed in its own musings. There is a sense that these creatures are caught between two worlds - one rooted in nature's beauty and simplicity, the other consumed by unknown worries or aspirations. It is as if they have momentarily stepped out of their storybook roles to ponder deeper questions about life itself. Rackham's masterful use of color lithography adds depth and vibrancy to this enchanting image from "Wind in the Willows". As we gaze upon it, we cannot help but wonder what mysteries occupy the minds of these curious creatures.
