EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases an exquisite manuscript from the 14th century, titled "Ms 390. Seneca the Younger, Opera, and Seneca the Elder, Excerpta controversiarum". The incipit page is adorned with a stunning historiated initial [L], featuring three prominent figures: Jerome, St Paul, and Seneca. Crafted by an anonymous illuminator from Veneto during the second quarter of the 14th century, this masterpiece reflects their exceptional skill and attention to detail. The parchment serves as a canvas for a mesmerizing three-quarter blue stave border embellished with delicate acanthus leaves, beads, and gold bezants. The composition also includes a coat of arms in bas-de-page (later addition) representing the prestigious del Legname family of Padua. This addition adds further depth to the artwork's historical significance. Thanks to kind permission from the Earl of Leicester and Trustees of Holkham Estate, we have access to this remarkable piece that seamlessly combines artistry with literature. It beautifully captures not only the essence of Seneca's writings but also pays homage to two influential figures in Christian history – Jerome and St Paul. Through this print by Bridgeman Images on behalf of Fine Art Finder, viewers can immerse themselves in centuries-old craftsmanship while appreciating both its aesthetic beauty and cultural importance.
