EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a stunning Flemish tapestry from the 16th century. The tapestry, titled "The History of David and Bathsheba" depicts the iconic biblical story of Bathsheba at her bath, surprised by King David. This particular image is the first panel of the series and was created in Brussels in 1505. Measuring an impressive 350x415 cm, this masterpiece is made from a combination of gold, silk, and wool fabric. It currently resides in the Royal Palace of La Granja de San Ildefonso in La Granja, Spain. The origins of this tapestry are somewhat mysterious as both its model and manufacturer remain anonymous. However, it is known that it was once part of Manuel I's collection in Portugal before being included in Princess Maria's dowry when she married Prince Philip of Spain. After passing through various hands over the centuries, this remarkable piece found its way to the Tapestry Museum where it is now proudly displayed as part of National Heritage (Patrimonio Nacional) inventory number 10005827. Photographer Paul Maeyaert has beautifully captured every intricate detail and vibrant color present in this historic artwork. His skillful composition allows viewers to appreciate not only its artistic value but also its cultural significance.
