CH89270 The Connecticut Settlers Entering the Western Reserve, 1795 (oil on canvas) by Pyle, Howard (1853-1911); 41x61 cm; Private Collection; (add.info.: In 1792, the Connecticut legislature granted 500, 000 acres of the western portion of New Connecticut to those of her citizens whose property had been burned by the British during the war. These lands were called the " Fire Lands." On the 5th of September, 1795, Connecticut sold the remaining three million acres of land to 3 trustees for the Connecticut Land Company, which decided to extinguish all Indian title to the west of the Cuyahoga River and survey the land into townships five miles square. Moses Cleaveland was selected to head a surveying party of about fifty people. Cleaveland landed at Conneaut Creek on July 4, 1795. Surveying was completed the following year and the Western Reserve was ready for settlement

The Connecticut Settlers Entering the Western Reserve, 1795

EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating oil painting by Howard Pyle that depicts a significant moment in American history. The artwork showcases the arrival of Connecticut settlers into the vast and promising lands known as the "Fire Lands". In this 41x61 cm canvas, Pyle skillfully captures the determination and hope of these pioneers as they embark on their journey towards new beginnings. The composition portrays a group of settlers, led by Moses Cleaveland, who was chosen to survey and establish townships in this uncharted territory. The painting's warm color palette evokes a sense of adventure and possibility. The lush green landscape stretches out before them, symbolizing fertile ground for growth and prosperity. As we gaze at this piece, we can almost feel the excitement pulsating through these brave individuals. Pyle's attention to detail brings life to each figure depicted in the scene - men, women, children - all eager to build homes and communities from scratch. Their resilience shines through their determined expressions as they push forward into unknown territories. This historic event marked an important chapter in American expansionism and westward migration during the late 18th century. It serves as a reminder of our ancestors' courage and perseverance in shaping our nation's destiny. As we admire this print from Fine Art Finder, let us reflect upon those who came before us; their sacrifices paved the way for future generations to thrive on this land now known as Ohio's Western Reserve.
