EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases "The Transcaucasian Railway Line from Batoum to Samarkand" a remarkable feat of engineering captured in vivid detail. Produced by Chocolat d'Aiguebelle as part of their series on Great Railway Lines, this promotional card from the early 20th century transports us back to an era of exploration and adventure. The image depicts the awe-inspiring railway line that stretches across vast landscapes, connecting the Georgian port city of Batoum to the ancient city of Samarkand in present-day Uzbekistan. The color litho technique used in this print adds depth and vibrancy, bringing to life every intricate detail of this monumental railway project. Chocolat d'Aiguebelle was renowned for its exceptional quality trade cards, which were highly sought after during that time. Established by Trappist monks at their abbey in Aiguebelle, France, the chocolaterie became a prominent supplier of chocolate products until its closure in 1978. However, its branch established in Morocco continues to produce chocolates under the brand name Aiguebelle today. Beyond being a mere promotional tool for Chocolat d'Aiguebelle's delectable treats, this print serves as a testament to human ingenuity and progress. It reminds us of our capacity to conquer great distances and connect diverse cultures through ambitious infrastructure projects like the Transcaucasian Railway Line. As we gaze upon this image, we are transported not only through space but also through time – invited to marvel at both nature's beauty and mankind's triumphs over it.
