EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the remarkable painting of "St. Francis Xavier walking on water" by an anonymous Spanish artist from the 17th century. The artwork, housed in the Museu de Marinha in Lisbon, Portugal, depicts a pivotal moment in the life of St. Francis Xavier. Born Francisco de Jasso y Azpilicueta in 1506, St. Francis Xavier was a prominent Navarrese-Basque Roman Catholic missionary and co-founder of the Society of Jesus. This painting captures his extraordinary ability to perform miracles as he walks effortlessly on water, symbolizing his unwavering faith and divine connection. As a companion of St. Ignatius of Loyola and one of the first Jesuits to take vows of poverty and chastity, St. Francis Xavier embarked on extensive missions across Asia during the 16th century. His evangelization work left an indelible mark on regions such as India, Japan, Borneo, and the Maluku Islands. The image beautifully portrays St. Francis Xavier's mission at sea with a ship sailing beside him—a testament to his maritime journeys that spread Christianity throughout distant lands. Leonard de Selva skillfully captured this awe-inspiring artwork through his lens while visiting Museu de Marinha—an exquisite representation that brings together history, religion, artistry, and spirituality.
