Sea Adventure: Hanno the Carthaginian (colour litho)
8668729 Sea Adventure: Hanno the Carthaginian (colour litho) by English School, (20th century); Private Collection; (add.info.: Hanno the Carthaginian. With nothing but open boats designed for coasting, and no navigational instruments, Hanno, the Carthaginian navigator, passed through the Mediterranean and Straits of Gibraltar about 500 BC. Instead of turning north along the European coast which was fairly well known, he went south down the African coast. He certainly worked past Sierra Leone and Cape Palmas, and it seems to have been off the Cameroons that shortage of food forced him back after meeting gorillas and many other terrors. EDITORS COMMENTS
This vibrant and detailed colour lithograph captures the incredible sea adventure of Hanno the Carthaginian, a legendary navigator from around 500 BC. With only open boats and no navigational instruments, Hanno embarked on a daring journey through the Mediterranean and beyond. Instead of following the well-known European coast, he ventured south along the African coastline.
As depicted in this print, Hanno encountered various challenges during his voyage, including shortages of food and terrifying encounters with gorillas. It is believed that he made it as far as Sierra Leone before being forced to turn back.
The artist has beautifully illustrated this historic moment in maritime history, showcasing the bravery and determination of Hanno as he explored unknown waters. The rich colours and intricate details bring this ancient tale to life, allowing viewers to imagine themselves alongside Hanno on his epic expedition.
This artwork is part of a series of cigarette cards on Sea Adventure issued by Hignett Brothers in 1939. It serves as a reminder of the adventurous spirit that has driven explorers throughout history to push boundaries and discover new horizons.
