Wahrend es zunachst hauptsachlich von der Geistlichkeit heftig bekampft wurde, war es am Ende des Jahrh bereits so weit durchgedrungen, dass sogar vornehme Damen, franzosischer Sitte folgend, den Tabak aus langen tonernen Pfeifen rauchten. Translation: Smokers. Tobacco smoking, that ancient American custom, spread to Germany during the Thirty Years' War. While it was initially fiercely opposed, mainly by the clergy, by the end of the century it had become so widespread that even distinguished ladies, following French custom, smoked the tobacco out of long clay pipes.
