The original "Big Ben"(engraving)

6032921 The original " Big Ben" (engraving) by English School, (19th century); Private Collection; (add.info.: The original " Big Ben." Properly " Big Ben" is the " Great Bell" not the Clock Tower. The new (present) Palace of Westminster opened in 1852 and this Big Ben - the great Bell - was cast by Warners of Norton, Stockton in 1856, intended to be named the Royal Victoria. However, it immediately developed a four inch crack and was replaced by the present one, cast in the Whitechapel Bell Foundry - which also fractured. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the original "Big Ben" a remarkable engraving by an English School artist from the 19th century. Housed in a private collection, this artwork sheds light on the fascinating history behind one of London's most iconic landmarks. Contrary to popular belief, "Big Ben" refers not to the Clock Tower itself but to its magnificent Great Bell. The present Palace of Westminster was inaugurated in 1852, and it was then that this Big Ben - initially intended to be named the Royal Victoria - was cast by Warners of Norton, Stockton in 1856. However, shortly after its creation, a four-inch crack appeared on the bell's surface, leading to its replacement. The Whitechapel Bell Foundry stepped up and crafted the current Big Ben that we know today; however, even this new bell suffered fractures over time. This loose engraving offers us a glimpse into these intricate details and historical anecdotes surrounding this famous landmark. Immerse yourself in this exquisite piece of art as you explore every delicate stroke and line meticulously etched onto paper. Let your imagination transport you back in time as you envision craftsmen working diligently at foundries like Warners of Norton or Whitechapel Bell Foundry. Adorn your walls with this timeless masterpiece capturing both architectural grandeur and human perseverance—a testament to London's rich heritage and enduring allure.
