EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a stunning George III giltwood sofa, crafted in 1765 by the renowned designer Robert Adam and master cabinetmaker Thomas Chippendale. The exquisite piece measures an impressive 252.5x110.5x91.5 cm and is currently held in a private collection. The sofa's design features a serpentine padded back, gracefully outscrolled arms, and a serpentine seat upholstered in luxurious blue floral damask cut silk-velvet. The intricate details of this masterpiece are truly awe-inspiring - from the foliage-wrapped reeding bordering the serpentine scrolled cresting to the carved anthemia on the arms that culminate in sunflower double rosettes. The deep seat-rail boasts an ornate central shell framed by griffins and sphinxes, while cabriole legs adorned with descending wreaths rest upon hairy-paw feet ringed by beaded girdles. Sphinxes and scrolling foliage grace the side-rails, centered by wreaths for added elegance. Although some repairs have been made over time - including replacements for several feet - this remarkable sofa retains its original charm with traces of water-gilt lacquer highlighting its delicate craftsmanship. Capturing both opulence and sophistication, this George III giltwood sofa exemplifies the timeless beauty of Georgian furniture design. Its presence would undoubtedly elevate any interior space to new heights of grandeur and refinement.
