EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the grandeur of Maiden Erleigh, a lost house in England. The photograph, taken by an English photographer in the 20th century, is part of Giles Worsley's book "England's Lost Houses" published in 2002. Maiden Erleigh was built after 1878 by John Hargreaves on the site of a previous 17th and 18th-century house. It gained fame for being owned by Solly Joel, a prominent figure in mining, brewing, and railway industries who acquired the estate in 1903. However, this magnificent neoclassical-style stately home met its unfortunate fate when it was demolished in 1960. The image showcases the impressive exterior of Maiden Erleigh with its neo-classical features such as pediments and a dome-shaped cupola. A long driveway leads up to the entrance, adding to the sense of grandeur. Despite its destruction decades ago, this photograph allows us to appreciate the architectural beauty that once graced this country estate near Reading. This image is preserved thanks to Bridgeman Images' Fine Art Finder collection. It serves as a reminder of England's rich architectural heritage while also highlighting how photography can immortalize lost treasures from our past.
