EDITORS COMMENTS
The east corridor of the Saloon in Clumber House, Nottinghamshire, is captured beautifully in this photograph from 'The English Country House' collection. The image, taken by an anonymous 20th-century English photographer, showcases the grandeur and elegance of this historic country house. Built between 1768 and 1778 by Stephen Wright for the 2nd Duke of Newcastle, Clumber House was unfortunately demolished in 1938. However, this photograph allows us to glimpse into its past glory. The east corridor is adorned with a stunning barrel-vaulted ceiling and intricate stucco work that reflects the neo-classical architecture prevalent during that time. The perspective view highlights the length and spaciousness of the corridor while drawing attention to the exquisite chandelier hanging from above. Statues placed within niches along the walls add a touch of classical artistry to the space. The plasterwork on display demonstrates meticulous craftsmanship, showcasing delicate details that were once part of Clumber House's interior decor. The plinth at one end adds a sense of grandeur to this stately home. This photograph captures not only a moment frozen in time but also serves as a reminder of our architectural heritage. It invites us to appreciate both the beauty and historical significance found within these magnificent country houses.
