Thirty-four years old Charles Smirke had his greatest successes when staging a "come-back" in 1934. In that year he won the Derby and St Leger, both on Windsor Lad. He steered Bahram to victory in the St Leger 1935, and Mahmoud in the Derby of 1936, both for HH Aga Khan. Apprenticed tos Wootton, Smirke had his first mount in 1922 and registered 39 wins in his first season. He has won the French Grand Prix and is among the leading jockeys of the present time.
