8668619 The Ceremony of the King's Keys (colour photo) by English Photographer, (20th century); Private Collection; (add.info.: The Ceremony of the King's Keys. The Tower of London has nightly witnessed the historic Ceremony of the Keys for many centuries. The Chief Warder, bearing the keys and accompanied by an escort, locks various gates of the Tower. At the arch of the Bloody Tower, he answers the sentry's challenge "Halt! Who comes there?" with the reply "The Keys." "Whose Keys?" "King George's Keys" replies the Chief Warder, and the sentry then passes the party with the words, "Advance, King George's Keys; all's well." The party proceeds to the guardroom, where the guard turns out and presents arms. The Chief Warder, stepping forward and removing his hat, calls out "God preserve King George!" to which all reply "Amen." EDITORS COMMENTS
This vibrant colour print captures the timeless tradition of The Ceremony of the King's Keys at the historic Tower of London. Dating back many centuries, this ceremony is a symbol of royal authority and security. The Chief Warder, holding the keys to various gates of the Tower, is accompanied by an escort as they make their nightly rounds. As they approach the arch of the Bloody Tower, a sentry challenges them with "Halt! Who comes there?" The Chief Warder confidently responds with "The Keys." When asked whose keys they are, he proudly declares "King George's Keys," signaling his allegiance to the monarch. With permission granted by the sentry, they proceed to lock up for the night. At each stop along their route, guards turn out and present arms in respect for this age-old tradition. In a solemn moment in front of all present, including visitors and fellow servicemen alike, the Chief Warder calls out "God preserve King George!" prompting everyone to respond with a resounding "Amen." This photograph not only captures a moment in time but also serves as a reminder of our rich history and enduring traditions that continue to be honored today.
