Aircraft diving in salute over the Royal Yacht (colour photo)

8668629 Aircraft diving in salute over the Royal Yacht (colour photo) by English Photographer, (20th century); Private Collection; (add.info.: Aircraft diving in salute over the Royal Yacht. The salute, both military and naval, traces its origin to the act of displaying complete or temporary disarmament. In the Army this custom took the form of disclosing the open hand, and in the Navy to the discharging of the guns. The salute has now developed into a sign of greeting and respect, and in the Air Force takes the form of the aircraft diving towards the ground. At the Coronation Naval Review at Spithead on 20 May 1937, three flights of aircraft, representative of the Fleet Air Arm, flew above the Royal Yacht, and when overhead dived in a ceremonial salute to His Majesty. This episode is shown in our picture. EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning colour print captures a moment of ceremonial significance as aircraft dive in salute over the Royal Yacht. The tradition of the salute dates back to the act of displaying disarmament, evolving into a gesture of greeting and respect across military branches. In this image from the Coronation Naval Review at Spithead in 1937, three flights of aircraft representing the Fleet Air Arm fly above the yacht before diving towards the ground in a ceremonial display for His Majesty. The vibrant colours and dynamic movement captured in this photograph convey both power and grace as these aircraft pay tribute to royalty. The precision and coordination required for such a display are evident, highlighting not only technical skill but also deep-rooted traditions within military culture. As we gaze upon this historic moment frozen in time, we are reminded of the rich tapestry of customs and rituals that shape our armed forces.
