Gooseberries on a Table, 1701 (oil on paper mounted on wood)
500076 Gooseberries on a Table, 1701 (oil on paper mounted on wood)
by Coorte, Adrian (c.1660-1707); 45.5x38.5 (framed) 29.7x22.8 (unframed) cm; Cleveland Museum of Art, OH, USA; (add.info.: Rather than depicting the expensive rarities seen in many 17th-century still lifes, Coorte chose humble gooseberries that could be picked wild almost anywhere. This artist devoted himself to the precise rendering of simple objects in small paintings. Set on a stone table are a few gooseberries, still attached to a branch. The strong illumination gives the composition an enchanting stillness, which contributes to Coortes appeal to modern taste. The light also gives the fruit a delicate translucency against the black background and reveals the veins of both the fruit and the leaves. The clearly defined crack, along with other small nicks and imperfections in the table, is also carefully highlighted. On the edge of the table the artist signed his name with an elegant flourish.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Adrian Coorte's masterpiece, "Gooseberries on a Table, 1701". In this exquisite oil painting on paper mounted on wood, Coorte deviates from the conventional still lifes of his time by focusing on humble gooseberries instead of luxurious and rare objects. The artist's dedication to capturing the intricate details of simple subjects is evident in this small-scale artwork. The composition features a branch with several gooseberries delicately placed on a stone table. Bathed in strong illumination, the scene exudes an enchanting stillness that resonates with modern audiences. The light not only accentuates the fruit's translucent quality against the dark background but also reveals the intricate veins present in both the berries and leaves. Coorte's meticulous attention to detail extends beyond just depicting nature accurately. He deliberately highlights imperfections such as a clearly defined crack and small nicks in the table, adding depth and authenticity to his work. To complete this masterpiece, he signs his name elegantly along the edge of the table. This remarkable piece is part of Cleveland Museum of Art's collection and serves as a testament to Coorte's artistic prowess. Through its simplicity yet precise rendering, "Gooseberries on a Table" continues to captivate viewers centuries after its creation.
