EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a silver medal commemorating the acquisition of Bombay on the marriage of King Charles II in 1670. Created by John Roettiers, this exquisite commemorative medal is housed at the National Army Museum in London. The acquisition of Bombay by England occurred in 1668 as part of the marriage settlement between King Charles II and Portuguese Catherine of Braganza. Subsequently, Charles bestowed it upon the East India Company, providing them with a more secure base on India's northwest coast compared to their leased factory in Surat. This strategic move transformed Bombay into an important port, shipbuilding center, and bustling trading city. The intricate details captured within this sculpture-like bust reflect Asian ethnicity and pay homage to Indian culture. The artistry behind this piece symbolizes both royalty and imperialism while serving as a testament to British ideology during that era. As we delve into its historical significance, we are reminded of how moments like these shape nations' destinies. This photograph not only captures an extraordinary work of art but also invites us to contemplate the complexities surrounding colonization and conquests throughout history. With Mumbai (formerly known as Bombay) now standing tall as one of India's most vibrant cities, this image serves as a visual reminder of its rich past intertwined with global influences.
