EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a Walloon soldier from the 16th century, providing us with a glimpse into the military attire of that era. The soldier is depicted wearing a striking morion helmet, which adds an air of intimidation to his appearance. His sleeveless doublet and baggy slashed scarlet trunk hose over scarlet stockings not only demonstrate his fashion sense but also highlight the flamboyant style prevalent during this period. Equipped for battle, the soldier carries both a sword and halberd, emphasizing his readiness to defend himself and his comrades on the battlefield. The intricate hand coloring by E. Lechevallier-Chevignard brings out every detail of this historical illustration, making it truly come alive. This lithograph is part of Georges Duplessis' renowned book "Costumes historiques des XVIe, XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles" (Historical costumes of the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries), published in Paris in 1867. Duplessis was an esteemed curator at Bibliotheque nationale while Lechevallier-Chevignard was a talented artist known for his work as an illustrator and interior designer. Through this image, we are transported back in time to witness the bravery and grandeur of soldiers who fought during one of history's most turbulent periods. It serves as a reminder of their sacrifice and valor while offering us insight into the rich tapestry that is our collective past.
