EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the title page from the libretto of Handel's opera Rinaldo, as composed by Giacomo Rossi in 1717. The print, created by an anonymous English School artist in the 18th century, measures 18 cm in height and is currently housed at the Gerald Coke Handel Collection within London's Foundling Museum. The title page provides a glimpse into the grandeur of this renowned opera production. It features an elaborate design with intricate details and elegant typography. The libretto was printed for J. Tonson and sold at his shop located near Katharine Street in London. Dedicated to Her Most Sacred Majesty, The Queen, this edition includes a preface by Aaron Hill, who translated the original Italian text into English and provided a detailed scenario for the performance. Additionally, there is a letter to readers written in Italian by Giacomo Rossi himself. Contained within this volume are both the Italian text and its English translation presented side by side. Furthermore, an English description of the plot can be found on pages xi-xii. Notably, this particular revival of Rinaldo took place in 1717 and ran for ten performances starting from January 5th. Some significant alterations were made to its score during this rendition; most notably Argante's role being sung by an alto instead of a bass while Eustazio's part was omitted entirely. Overall, this exquisite print offers viewers a glimpse into one of Handel's iconic operas through its beautifully crafted title page from centuries ago.
