Hochradfahrer / High Cyclist (colour litho)

8666301 Hochradfahrer / High Cyclist (colour litho) by German School, (20th century); Private Collection; (add.info.: Hochradfahrer. Translation: High Cyclist. The forerunner of the modern bicycle was the penny-farthing, which appeared around 1870 and is now only demonstrated in artistic riding. Getting on and off and riding this two wheeler (bicycle) was very difficult. The penny farthing could never have become a people's vehicle; it only became the so-called safety wheel with two wheels of the same size that followed it. EDITORS COMMENTS
This vibrant colour lithograph captures the daring and skill of a "Hochradfahrer" or High Cyclist from the 20th century German School. The high cyclist is perched atop a penny-farthing, a precursor to the modern bicycle that was popular in the late 19th century. The image showcases the artistry and difficulty of riding such a unique two-wheeled vehicle. With its large front wheel and smaller back wheel, mounting and dismounting the penny-farthing required great agility and balance. Only skilled riders could navigate these early bicycles with ease. Despite its challenges, the penny-farthing was never able to become a mainstream mode of transportation due to its impracticality for everyday use. It was ultimately replaced by the "safety wheel" with two equal-sized wheels that we recognize as today's standard bicycle. This illustration is part of Deutsche Kulturbilder, 1400-1900, originally published in 1934 by Cigaretten-Bilderdienst Hamburg-Bahrenfeld. It serves as a fascinating glimpse into cycling history and highlights the evolution of this beloved form of transportation over time. Overall, this print celebrates both the ingenuity of early cyclists and their dedication to mastering an unconventional means of travel.
