Watermill at Rossett, North Wales (oil on board)
2956759 Watermill at Rossett, North Wales (oil on board)
by Huggins, William (1820-84); 53.3x39.4 cm; Private Collection; (add.info.: Marford Mill in Rossett, North Wales, was built in the 18th century on the foundations of a much older mill, possibly extant when a mill was recorded here in the Domesday Book of 1086. Liverpool artists often crossed into North Wales to find picturesque subjects. Huggins here treats his favourites in his distinctive palette; sunlight filtering through leaves, a dilapidated building behind, and of course his beloved chickens. Marford Mill was the Kings Mill, and was wrecked by the rebel forces of Owain Glyndar in the early 15th century, and destroyed by fire in the 18th. From 1544 the villagers Allington, Gresford, Burton and Llay, could patronise a rival mill on the opposite side of the road. Now known as Rossett Mill, the newer building was sketched by Turner in 1795. Both mills were acquired by Sir John Trevor of Trevalyn Hall in the 17th century. Both buildings still stand.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the "Watermill at Rossett, North Wales" painted by William Huggins in the 19th century. The artwork depicts Marford Mill, a historic structure built upon ancient foundations dating back to the Domesday Book of 1086. Situated in a picturesque setting, Liverpool artists like Huggins often ventured into North Wales to find inspiration for their works. Huggins's distinctive palette beautifully captures the play of sunlight filtering through leaves, casting an enchanting glow on the scene. Behind the watermill stands a dilapidated building, adding an element of rustic charm and history to the composition. Notably, Huggins includes his beloved chickens within this idyllic landscape. Marford Mill has endured its fair share of challenges throughout history. It was once known as Kings Mill until it fell victim to Owain Glyndar's rebel forces in the early 15th century and later suffered destruction by fire in the 18th century. However, despite these setbacks, both Marford Mill and its rival mill across the road still stand today. Turner himself sketched Rossett Mill—the newer building—back in 1795, further highlighting its significance as a subject for artistic exploration over centuries. Both mills were eventually acquired by Sir John Trevor of Trevalyn Hall during the 17th century. This remarkable print offers viewers a glimpse into not only Huggins's skillful portrayal but also into North Wales' rich historical tapestry that continues to captivate audiences with its timeless beauty.
