This print captures a unique and intriguing ceremony that took place in London during the early 19th century. Entitled "Representation of the Ceremony of Presenting the Sheriffs of London, Samuel Birch and William Heygate Esqs. in the Court of the Exchequer on the morrow after Michaelmas day 1811" this engraving by James Stow offers a glimpse into a long-forgotten tradition. The ceremony depicted here was performed until 1859 after the presentation of the sheriffs of London. It involved various symbolic actions and proclamations, as described by C. John Mayle in his depiction notes. The image showcases an alderman cutting fagots with both a hatchet and billhook while surrounded by onlookers, including tenants and occupiers from specific locations such as The Moors in Salop county and The Forge in Middlesex parish. The attention to detail captured by Whichelo is remarkable, bringing to life this curious event that held significance for those involved at that time. From the expressions on people's faces to their intricate costumes, every element adds depth to our understanding of this historical moment. As we gaze upon this print today, we are transported back to a time when traditions were upheld with great pomp and circumstance.
