The White Star Line steamship 'Adriatic' leaving Liverpool, late 19th century (oil painting)
7338104 The White Star Line steamship 'Adriatic' leaving Liverpool, late 19th century (oil painting) by Greenwood, George Parker (1850-1904); 25.4x40.6 cm; National Maritime Museum, London, UK; (add.info.: Creator: George Parker Greenwood
A painting showing the passenger steamship 'Adriatic' as it is sailing out of Liverpool. She is accompanied by a tug, a small sailing boat moves past her on the far right. Other ships can be seen alongside in the distance and the buildings of Liverpool are visible. The 'Adriatic' was built in 1872 at Belfast by Harland and Wolff. She was of the Oceanic class, and travelled between Liverpool and New York 1872-1899. She had four masts, and her hull, framework, masts, yards, decks, and whole ship, except the floors and furniture, were made of iron. Over the forepart of the ship a vast iron hurricane-deck was constructed, which not only prevented the waves of a storm washing over the main-deck, but also added to the strength of the vessel. The ship could accommodate 1150 passengers and she was fitted for gas, generated by oil, in place of candles and oil-lamps. She was broken up in 1899.); © National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, London

EDITORS COMMENTS
Step back in time to the late 19th century with this stunning oil painting of The White Star Line steamship 'Adriatic' leaving Liverpool. Painted by George Parker Greenwood, this piece captures the grandeur and elegance of a bygone era of travel.
The 'Adriatic' is depicted sailing gracefully out of Liverpool, accompanied by a tugboat and passing a small sailing vessel on her journey. In the background, other ships can be seen alongside as well as the iconic buildings of Liverpool.
Built in 1872 at Belfast by Harland and Wolff, the 'Adriatic' was part of the Oceanic class and made regular trips between Liverpool and New York until 1899. With four masts and an iron hull, she could accommodate up to 1150 passengers and was equipped with gas lighting for illumination.
This painting not only showcases the technical marvels of maritime engineering during that time but also evokes a sense of nostalgia for a period when transatlantic voyages were undertaken with style and sophistication. A true masterpiece that transports you back to an age when steamships ruled the seas.
