Victoria Cross, Lieutenant Mark Walker, 1st Battalion, 3rd (The East Kent) Regiment of Foot (The Buffs) (metal)

5921022 Victoria Cross, Lieutenant Mark Walker, 1st Battalion, 3rd (The East Kent) Regiment of Foot (The Buffs) (metal) by British School, (19th century); National Army Museum, London; (add.info.: Victoria Cross awarded to Lieutenant (later General) Mark Walker, 1st Battalion, 3rd (The East Kent) Regiment of Foot (The Buffs), 1854.
Born in Ireland, the son of Captain Alexander Walker who had distinguished himself in the Peninsula with the 38th Foot, Lieutenant Mark Walker was serving as Adjutant in the 30th (Cambridgeshire) Regiment of Foot when he earned the Victoria Cross for his gallantry at Inkerman on 5 November 1854. When the regiment was attacked and in imminent danger of being overwhelmed by two battalions of Russian Infantry, Walker jumped over the wall behind which his men were sheltering and led them forward in an inspired counter-attack that caused the enemy to flee, notwithstanding their superior numbers.
In spite of subsequently losing an arm, Walker continued his military career as an officer in the 3rd (The East Kent) Regiment (the Buffs) and saw active service again as a Brigade Major in the 2nd China War of 1857-60, for which he was mentioned in despatches. He ended his 46-year army career as a general, receiving a knighthood in 1893, and died at Folkestone in 1902 at the age of 75.); © National Army Museum

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the esteemed Victoria Cross awarded to Lieutenant Mark Walker, a valiant soldier of the 1st Battalion, 3rd (The East Kent) Regiment of Foot (The Buffs). Crafted from metal and dating back to the 19th century, this historic artifact is housed in the National Army Museum in London. Lieutenant Mark Walker's remarkable journey began in Ireland as the son of Captain Alexander Walker, a distinguished officer. It was during his service as Adjutant in the 30th (Cambridgeshire) Regiment of Foot that he displayed extraordinary bravery at Inkerman on November 5,1854. Faced with imminent danger from two battalions of Russian Infantry threatening his regiment's safety, Walker fearlessly led his men forward in an inspired counter-attack. Despite being outnumbered, their courage prevailed and forced the enemy to retreat. Even after losing an arm during battle, Walker's dedication to military service remained unwavering. He continued his illustrious career as an officer in The Buffs and played a crucial role as Brigade Major during the intense conflict known as the Second China War between 1857 and 1860. His exemplary performance earned him mentions in despatches. Walker concluded his impressive forty-six-year army tenure as a general and received knighthood recognition in 1893 for his outstanding contributions. At seventy-five years old, he passed away peacefully at Folkestone but left behind an enduring legacy of heroism and valor that will forever be remembered through this iconic Victoria Cross print.
