Symbolic female figure, in memory of Captain Henry Bryne (d.1780), c.1780 (watercolour, gold, glass)

7340087 Symbolic female figure, in memory of Captain Henry Bryne (d.1780), c.1780 (watercolour, gold, glass) by Unknown artist, (18th century); 2.5x1.7 cm; National Maritime Museum, London, UK; (add.info.: Creator: unknown
An oval mourning brooch against a background of rocks, a symbolic classical female figure facing right with arms raised. Over her head are a flying dove and the head and torso of a winged putto, pointing down to the right. Above are the words 'NOT LOST BUT GONE BEFORE'. The right side is blank, with indications of a cloud and an indeterminate shape that may bear the initials 'BA'. The whole leaves the impression that something else should have been inserted on the right, possibly a portrait or perhaps a lock of hair now missing. The design is in sepia or brown watercolour on a hard surface that has marginal cracks, possibly a very thin mineral material, and is within a gold frame with a blue-glass cloisonn); © National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, London

EDITORS COMMENTS
This delicate and intricate watercolour print depicts a symbolic female figure, created in memory of Captain Henry Bryne who passed away in 1780. The unknown artist has captured the essence of mourning and remembrance with great detail and emotion. The oval mourning brooch features a classical female figure facing right, her arms raised in a gesture of sorrow or supplication. Above her head, a flying dove symbolizes peace and freedom, while a winged putto points downwards to the right. The words "NOT LOST BUT GONE BEFORE" hover above the figure, offering comfort to those left behind. The right side of the brooch is left blank, hinting at something missing - perhaps a portrait or even a lock of hair that once belonged to Captain Bryne. The overall design is rendered in sepia or brown watercolour on what appears to be a thin mineral material with cracks around the edges. This poignant piece is housed within an elegant gold frame adorned with blue-glass cloisonné accents. It serves as both a tribute to Captain Henry Bryne's life and legacy, as well as a timeless reminder of the enduring power of love and loss.
