EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a pair of sunglasses that once belonged to Captain Charles Fordyce, a distinguished officer in the 2nd Battalion The Seaforth Highlanders. Dating back to around 1914, these sunglasses are a testament to the style and functionality of eyewear during that era. Captain Charles Elphinstone Fordyce had an impressive military career, starting as a second lieutenant in August 1916 and eventually rising through the ranks to become a captain in November 1927. He served with great distinction during World War One and was awarded several service medals for his bravery and dedication. The sunglasses themselves exude an air of sophistication and timeless elegance. They were not only practical for shielding one's eyes from the sun but also symbolized status and authority. As we gaze upon this artifact from history, we can't help but imagine Captain Fordyce donning them while leading his troops on the battlefield or perhaps wearing them during moments of respite amidst challenging circumstances. Preserved by the National Army Museum in London, this photograph allows us to connect with the past and appreciate both the personal belongings of individuals who shaped history as well as their remarkable stories. It serves as a reminder of those who have sacrificed so much for their country and invites us to reflect on their courage and commitment.
