(metal) by British School, (19th century); National Army Museum, London; (add.info.: Silver Regimental Medal awarded to Private John Connors, 3rd (The East Kent) Regiment of Foot (The Buffs), for his gallantry during the assault on the Redan, 8 September 1855.
John Connors, who is erroneously referred to as Joseph Connors in some sources, was born in County Kerry, Ireland and enlisted on 8 January 1849, when he was described as a labourer. He earned the Victoria Cross for conspicuous courage and devotion during the assault on the Redan on 8 September 1855. According to the citation, published in The London Gazette of 24 February 1857, Private Connors got inside the Redan at great personal risk, and seeing an officer of the 30th Regiment surrounded by the enemy, he rushed to his assistance. He immediately shot one of the Russians, ran his bayonet through another, and then for some time carried on a hand-to-hand encounter against great odds until support came.
Before he could receive his Victoria Cross, Connors tragically died. It is believed he fell to his death from the battlements of Port Neuf, on the island of Corfu, where the Buffs were then garrisoned, on 29 January 1857. Connors is buried on the island. The whereabouts of his VC is not known and it is possible that his widow, then living in County Galway, never received it.); © National Army Museum

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Silver Regimental Medal awarded to Private John Connors of the 3rd (The East Kent) Regiment of Foot (The Buffs) in 1855. Crafted from silver, this prestigious medal is a testament to Connors' gallantry during the assault on the Redan on September 8th, 1855. Born in County Kerry, Ireland, Connors enlisted as a labourer on January 8th, 1849. His remarkable bravery and devotion earned him the Victoria Cross, which he tragically never received. The citation published in The London Gazette of February 24th, 1857 recounts how Private Connors fearlessly entered the Redan at great personal risk to aid an officer surrounded by enemy forces. He swiftly eliminated two Russians with his rifle and bayonet before engaging in hand-to-hand combat against overwhelming odds until reinforcements arrived. Sadly, before he could be presented with his well-deserved Victoria Cross, tragedy struck. On January 29th, 1857, it is believed that Connors fell from the battlements of Port Neuf on Corfu Island where his regiment was stationed. He was laid to rest there while his widow resided in County Galway without ever receiving her late husband's VC. Today, this striking image serves as a poignant reminder of Private John Connors' extraordinary courage and sacrifice for his comrades and country.
