Replica Victoria Cross awarded to Private John Connors VC, 3rd (The East Kent) Regiment of Foot (The Buffs) (metal)

5925144 Replica Victoria Cross awarded to Private John Connors VC, 3rd (The East Kent) Regiment of Foot (The Buffs) (metal) by British School, (19th century); National Army Museum, London; (add.info.: Replica Victoria Cross awarded to Private John Connors VC, 3rd (The East Kent) Regiment of Foot (The Buffs).
John Connors, who is erroneously referred to as Joseph Connors in some sources, was born in County Kerry, Ireland and enlisted on 8 January 1849, when he was described as a labourer. He earned the Victoria Cross (VC) for conspicuous courage and devotion during the assault on the Redan on 8 September 1855. According to the citation, published in The London Gazette of 24 February 1857, Private Connors got inside the Redan at great personal risk, and seeing an officer of the 30th Regiment surrounded by the enemy, he rushed to his assistance. He immediately shot one of the Russians, ran his bayonet through another, and then for some time carried on a hand-to-hand encounter against great odds until support came.
Before he could receive his VC, Connors tragically died. It is believed he fell to his death from the battlements of Port Neuf, on the island of Corfu, where the Buffs were then garrisoned, on 29 January 1857. Connors is buried on the island. The whereabouts of his original VC is not known and it is possible that his widow, then living in County Galway, never received it.); © National Army Museum

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a replica Victoria Cross awarded to Private John Connors VC, a brave soldier from the 3rd (The East Kent) Regiment of Foot (The Buffs). Crafted in metal and preserved at the National Army Museum in London, this remarkable piece symbolizes Connors' extraordinary valor and sacrifice. Born in County Kerry, Ireland, Connors enlisted as a laborer on January 8,1849. His momentous act of courage occurred during the assault on the Redan on September 8,1855. Inside the Redan's perilous walls, he fearlessly came to the aid of an officer from another regiment who was surrounded by enemy forces. With unwavering determination, Connors swiftly eliminated one Russian soldier with his firearm before impaling another with his bayonet. Despite facing overwhelming odds for some time until reinforcements arrived, he valiantly fought hand-to-hand. Sadly, tragedy struck before Connors could receive his well-deserved Victoria Cross. On January 29th, 1857, while stationed at Port Neuf on Corfu Island where The Buffs were garrisoned at that time; he tragically fell to his death from its battlements. He now rests eternally on that very island. Regrettably though unsurprisingly given historical circumstances and limited information available today; it remains unknown where his original Victoria Cross is located or if it ever reached him posthumously. It is possible that his widow residing in County Galway never received this prestigious honor. Through this poignant image captured by Bridgeman Images for Fine Art Finder and displayed here under copyright by the National Army Museum; we are reminded of Private John Connor's indomitable spirit and selfless heroism which earned him eternal respect within military history.
