EDITORS COMMENTS
The captivating print showcases Captain Sir William Peel RN, VC, KCB, alongside the brave men of the 53rd Regiment and the Naval Brigade of HMS Shannon during their valiant attack on Khudjwah on September 21,1857. This exquisite mezzotint by John Lucas, reproduced by J Chant and published by Henry Graves and Co in July 1857, immortalizes a moment of heroism and camaraderie. Captain Sir William Peel had already proven his mettle in battle during the Crimean War where he earned the prestigious Victoria Cross for his exceptional bravery. In the India Mutiny that followed from 1857 to 1859, Peel's Naval Brigade played a pivotal role in capturing Lucknow with their formidable heavy guns. However, tragedy struck when Peel was grievously wounded by a musket ball during this victorious assault. Sadly, he succumbed to smallpox later that same year. This portrait not only commemorates an esteemed naval officer but also pays tribute to all those who served under him. It captures the essence of dedication and sacrifice exhibited by these decorated soldiers as they fought side-by-side against formidable odds. Displayed at London's National Army Museum, this historic image serves as a reminder of our military heritage and honors those who have selflessly defended our nation throughout history. With its intricate engravings and meticulous attention to detail, this artwork stands as a testament to courage and valor within both navy and army ranks alike.
