EDITORS COMMENTS
The photograph captures a historic artifact, the Ashanti Medal 1900 with the clasp "Kumassi" belonging to Captain H C J Biss of the West African Frontier Force. This metal print, housed at the National Army Museum in London, holds immense significance in commemorating Captain Biss's bravery and service during a critical period. The Ashanti Medal was awarded to those who defended the garrison at Kumasi in the Ashanti kingdom and participated in relief efforts after they were besieged by a native uprising known as the War of the Golden Stool. Captain Biss played an instrumental role in leading his troops during this challenging time. The West African Frontier Force, established in 1900, oversaw colonial forces across West Africa. Comprising units such as The Northern Nigeria Regiment, The Southern Nigeria Regiment, The Gold Coast Regiment, The Sierra Leone Battalion, and the Gambia Regiment - all locally recruited but under British command - these forces maintained order and protected British interests within their respective regions. This print not only showcases an exquisite medal but also serves as a testament to Captain Biss's courage and dedication to duty. It symbolizes both individual heroism and collective efforts towards maintaining peace amidst tumultuous times. As we admire this piece of history captured through Bridgeman Images' lens for Fine Art Finder, let us remember those who served selflessly on distant shores to protect their nation's interests.
