EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a stunning Louis XV commode, crafted around 1740 by the talented artisan Bernard van Risamburgh. Measuring an impressive 84x178x69 cm, this exquisite piece is currently held in a private collection. The commode features a serpentine-fronted moulded Portor marble top that adds an air of elegance to the overall design. The doors are mounted sans traverse and adorned with Chinese lacquer panels embellished with European motifs depicting figures amidst picturesque landscapes. A central cartouche frames these scenes, surrounded by intricate C-scrolls, rocaille, and trailing flowers. The sides of the commode boast waved doors that open to reveal a compartment complete with a shelf for storage purposes. These doors mirror the elaborate decoration found on the front panels and are mounted with great attention to detail. Delicate ruffled shell and foliate angles grace each corner of this remarkable piece, while splayed legs terminate in floral scroll-cast sabots, adding both stability and visual appeal. Although there have been some minor restorations over time to preserve its beauty, including repairs to the marble top and refreshing of ebonized uprights, this Louis XV commode remains an exceptional example of craftsmanship from its era. Photographed by eChristies Images and made available through Bridgeman Images' extensive collection, this print captures every intricate detail of this magnificent antique furniture piece for all art enthusiasts to admire.
