Apollo and Daphne, 1517-18 (fresco)
2646086 Apollo and Daphne, 1517-18 (fresco) by Peruzzi, Baldassarre (1481-1536) (and workshop); Villa Farnesina, Rome, Italy; (add.info.: Rome, Villa Farnesina, The Hall of Perspectives: the ample frieze with mythological scenes inspired by the Ovid Metamorphoses. Detail of Apollo and Daphne.
Frescoes by Baldassarre Peruzzi and workshop (Giulio Romano?) 1517-18.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the exquisite fresco painting of "Apollo and Daphne" by Baldassarre Peruzzi, located in the Villa Farnesina in Rome, Italy. The artwork is part of a larger frieze that depicts mythological scenes inspired by Ovid's Metamorphoses. In this particular detail, we witness the dramatic moment when Apollo reaches out to grasp Daphne, believing he has finally caught up with her. However, as he touches her, he realizes that she is transforming into a tree. Daphne desperately tries to continue running forward, causing her upper body to lean forward while her legs remain rooted to the ground - an imminent completion of her metamorphosis. The figure lying before them represents Peneus, the river god and father of Daphne. With his flowing white beard and leaning against an urna (urn), he symbolizes his acceptance of his daughter's plea for transformation into a tree so she can uphold her vow of chastity. Surrounding these central characters are nymphs and other river deities who add depth and context to this mythical scene. Their presence enhances the overall narrative depicted in this stunning fresco. Through this print from Fine Art Finder by Bridgeman Images, viewers can appreciate not only Peruzzi's artistic mastery but also delve into the rich mythology behind Apollo and Daphne's tragic tale within the grandeur of Villa Farnesina's Hall of Perspectives.
