EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph taken in October 1925, we see Syed Ali, a native Mahout from India, riding Indiarani behind a barrow at the London Zoo. The image captures a unique moment of connection between man and elephant as they navigate through the zoo grounds. Indiarani, a magnificent female Asian Elephant, was gifted to the zoo by H. H. Sir Jitendra Narayan, the 23rd Maharaja of Cooch Behar on July 16th, 1920. Syed Ali was specially brought over from India to train and care for Indiarani during her time at the zoo. The photo showcases not only the bond between Syed Ali and Indiarani but also offers us a glimpse into life at the London Zoo during that era. Visitors can be seen in awe as they observe this majestic creature being guided by its skilled mahout. This snapshot of wildlife history reminds us of our fascination with animals and their place within our society. It highlights both human curiosity towards exotic creatures and our desire to understand them better through observation and interaction. As we gaze upon this timeless image captured by Frederick William Bond, we are transported back to an era when zoos were windows into distant lands filled with wonderment. It serves as a testament to our ongoing relationship with nature and reminds us of the importance of preserving these incredible creatures for future generations to appreciate.
