The Marigold Family on a Party of Pleasure - A Chaotic Adventure Unleashed by Nature's Fury
EDITORS COMMENTS
. In this whimsical hand-coloured engraving from 1824, artist Isaac Robert Cruikshank takes us on a hilarious journey with the Marigold family as they embark on a supposedly pleasurable outing in the little Bay of Biscay. However, what was meant to be an idyllic day quickly turns into pandemonium when a sudden storm unleashes its fury upon them. The scene is filled with uproarious chaos and comical mishaps. The river Thames becomes choppy and turbulent, tossing their overloaded pleasure boat like a toy in rough waters. The snarling dog adds to the mayhem while mortar boards fly off heads and rowers struggle to maintain control amidst the tidal wave. Amidst all this madness, we see caricatured characters desperately clinging onto anything they can find – walking sticks, oars, even each other! A sailing barge and tugboat are also caught up in the tempestuous maelstrom. Cruikshank's masterful use of satire brings out both amusement and sympathy for these hapless adventurers who thought they were embarking on a leisurely excursion. As we observe this delightful cartoon-like scene unfold before our eyes, we cannot help but chuckle at their misfortune while marveling at Cruikshank's artistic prowess. This print captures not only the humor but also serves as a reminder
