499717 Trees on a Rocky Hillside, c.1849 (oil on canvas)
by Durand, Asher Brown (1796-1886); 64.77x83.18 (framed) 42.5x61.3 (unframed) cm; Cleveland Museum of Art, OH, USA; (add.info.: Inspired by the pictures of Thomas Cole (also in this gallery), a forty-four- year-old Durand abandoned his career as an engraver and turned to landscape painting. While Coles paintings moralize and reflect on the meaning of history, Durand adopted a more straight-forward realism based on his close, intense observation of nature. Tress on a Rocky Hillside is an early example of a true outdoor sketch and reveals how this new practice led to effects that look strikingly different from earlier landscapes. Rocks and trees are cropped in an unusual manner, and light is diffused and scattered, as it really appears in nature. Compared with the grand panoramas of the Hudson River School, Durands painting seems refreshingly free from formula or convention.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Asher Brown Durand's masterpiece, "Trees on a Rocky Hillside" painted around 1849. The oil on canvas artwork, now housed in the Cleveland Museum of Art in Ohio, USA, measures 64.77x83.18 cm when framed and 42.5x61.3 cm unframed. Durand was inspired by the works of Thomas Cole, another renowned artist featured in the same gallery as this piece. At the age of forty-four, Durand decided to abandon his career as an engraver and delve into landscape painting instead. Unlike Cole's moralizing and historical reflections depicted in his paintings, Durand opted for a more straightforward realism approach based on his intense observation of nature. "Trees on a Rocky Hillside" is one of Durand's early examples of true outdoor sketching techniques that resulted in strikingly different effects compared to earlier landscapes. The rocks and trees are cropped unusually while light is diffused and scattered just as it appears naturally. In contrast to the grand panoramas commonly associated with Hudson River School artists like Cole, Durand's painting feels refreshingly free from formula or convention. It exudes a sense of freedom and authenticity brought about by his close connection with nature during its creation. This print serves as a testament to Durand's skillful ability to capture the beauty and essence of nature through artistry that transcends time.
