961147 Page from the Dialogus Creaturarum (litho) by Dutch School, (15th century); Private Collection; (add.info.: Choice examples of early printing and engraving, facsimiles from rare and curious books. Dialogue of the Sun and the Moon. The present plate is from a book called the The Dialogus Creaturarum, in which conversations between the sun and moon and various animals are related and illustrated. EDITORS COMMENTS
This lithograph print, titled "Page from the Dialogus Creaturarum" takes us back to the 15th century Dutch School and offers a glimpse into the world of early printing and engraving. The page is adorned with intricate borders, decorative illustrations, and ornate Latin text that tells the story of a dialogue between the Sun, Moon, and various animals. The anthropomorphic nature of this artwork adds an enchanting touch as we witness celestial bodies engaging in conversation with earthly creatures. The suns and moons depicted here are not mere astronomical objects but characters with personalities and voices. The attention to detail in both illustration and typography showcases the skillful craftsmanship of this era. Each dialogue is accompanied by cuts in a style reminiscent of this particular plate, making it an exceptional example among its Dutch counterparts. Originally printed by Gerard Leew at Gouda in 1480, "The Dialogus Creaturarum" holds its place as one of the most interesting works from that time period. This facsimile print allows us to appreciate not only its historical significance but also its artistic beauty. As we gaze upon this page from centuries past, we are transported to a world where fables come alive through printing techniques that were groundbreaking for their time. It serves as a reminder of how far we have come in our journey through artistry and storytelling.
