This view shows a waterfall on the River Lledr, close to Llewellyn Peak (the title is Townes own spelling). Towne sketched the scene during a tour of Wales in 1777. The paper shows a fold line, probably from being carried in Townes sketching portfolio. He used thin washes of transparent colour, leaving the white paper bare for the tumbling water, and outlined forms in fine pen.); Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Bridge and Waterfall near Llyngwellyn, 1777" by Francis Towne takes us back to the picturesque landscapes of Wales in the 18th century. The artwork showcases a stunning waterfall on the River Lledr, situated close to Llewellyn Peak. Towne's meticulous attention to detail is evident in this watercolour and ink masterpiece. Using thin washes of transparent colour, he skillfully captures the essence of nature, leaving the white paper bare for the tumbling water. The fine pen outlines add depth and structure to the scene. The image transports us to a tranquil countryside setting with its vibrant colours and lush surroundings. A charming bridge spans across the river, leading our eyes towards a quaint cottage nestled amidst towering trees. It is an idyllic representation of rural life during that era. This artwork not only reflects Towne's artistic talent but also serves as a testament to his love for nature and exploration. The fold line on the paper suggests that it was once part of Towne's sketching portfolio during his tour of Wales. With its rich history and natural beauty, this painting encapsulates both Welsh heritage and European artistry. It serves as a reminder of how art can capture fleeting moments in time while preserving them for generations to come.
