William Lamb Collection

William Lamb was a British politician who served as the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1834 to 1835. He was born in London, England in 1779 and educated at Trinity College, Cambridge. He began his political career as a Whig MP for Leominster in 1806 and held various government posts throughout his career including Home Secretary and Leader of the House of Commons. In 1827 he became Viscount Melbourne, which allowed him to serve as Prime Minister from 1834-1835. During this time he passed several important reforms such as the Poor Law Amendment Act (1834) and Municipal Corporations Act (1835). He also supported Catholic emancipation and parliamentary reform but these were not successful during his tenure. After resigning from office he continued to serve in Parliament until his death in 1848.
