John Russell Collection

John Russell was a British politician and Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1846 to 1852. He was born in London in 1792, into a wealthy family, and educated at Eton College. He entered politics in 1813 as a Member of Parliament for the borough of Tavistock. During his long political career he held several ministerial posts, including Home Secretary and Foreign Secretary. In 1846 he became Prime Minister following the resignation of Sir Robert Peel over the repeal of the Corn Laws. As Prime Minister Russell sought to maintain peace between Britain and its European neighbours while introducing reforms such as abolishing slavery in British colonies and extending voting rights to more people. His government also passed laws allowing freedom of religion, press censorship laws, trade union legislation, public health acts and factory acts which improved working conditions for many people across Britain. Despite these successes his government was defeated by Lord Derby's Conservative Party in 1852 ending his tenure as Prime Minister after six years in office.
