Harold Macmillan Collection

Harold Macmillan was a British politician who served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1957 to 1963. He was born in London, England and educated at Eton College and Oxford University. As a Member of Parliament for Stockton-on-Tees from 1924 to 1929, he held several ministerial posts before becoming Prime Minister in 1957. During his tenure, Macmillan oversaw the introduction of major social reforms such as the Clean Air Act and the National Health Service. He also played a key role in Britain's entry into the European Economic Community (EEC) in 1973. His foreign policy focused on improving relations with France and West Germany while maintaining strong ties with the United States. After leaving office, Macmillan continued to serve as an elder statesman until his death in 1986 at age 92.
