George Hamilton-Gordon Collection

George Hamilton-Gordon, 4th Earl of Aberdeen, was a British statesman who served as Prime Minister from 1852 to 1855. He was born in Edinburgh in 1784 and educated at Harrow and Oxford. He entered the House of Commons in 1806 and held various ministerial posts before becoming Prime Minister. During his tenure as Prime Minister he sought to maintain peace between Britain and Russia during the Crimean War, although he was unsuccessful. After leaving office he continued to serve in Parliament until his death in 1860. He is remembered for his efforts to promote free trade, reduce government expenditure, reform the civil service and improve public education. His legacy includes a number of important reforms that shaped modern Britain.
