Edward Heath Collection

Edward Heath (1916-2005) was a British politician who served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1970 to 1974. He was born in Broadstairs, Kent, and educated at Balliol College, Oxford. He entered politics in 1950 as the Member of Parliament for Bexley and held various ministerial posts in the Conservative governments of Harold Macmillan and Alec Douglas-Home. In 1965 he became Leader of the Opposition before leading his party to victory in the 1970 general election. As Prime Minister, Heath sought to modernise Britain's economy by joining the European Economic Community (EEC), introducing a series of economic reforms including wage and price controls, abolishing exchange controls and introducing VAT. He also oversaw major industrial disputes such as The Three Day Week dispute with miners which ultimately led to his downfall when Labour won a narrow majority at the February 1974 general election. After leaving office he remained an active backbencher until 2001 when he retired from Parliament aged 85 after serving over 50 years as an MP.
