Charles Watson-Wentworth, 2nd Marquess of Rockingham (1730-1782), was a British Whig statesman who served as Prime Minister of Great Britain twice. He was born in London, England and educated at St John's College, Cambridge. He entered politics in 1750 and quickly rose to prominence as an advocate for parliamentary reform and the repeal of the unpopular Stamp Act. In 1765 he became leader of the Rockingham Whigs and served as Prime Minister from 1765 to 1766 and again from 1782 to 1782. During his time in office he championed free trade, religious toleration, civil liberties, constitutional reform, economic development and colonial independence. His legacy is remembered today for his commitment to liberty and justice for all people regardless of their social class or religion.
