Politics Collection

Politics in Portugal is a multi-party system, with the Prime Minister as the head of government. The President is elected by popular vote and serves as the Head of State. The Parliament consists of 230 members, elected by proportional representation. The main political parties are the Social Democratic Party, the Socialist Party, and the People's Party. Portugal has been a member of the European Union since 1986 and is part of both NATO and Schengen Area agreements. In recent years Portugal has seen an increase in immigration from other parts of Europe, Africa, Asia and Latin America leading to increased diversity within its population. This has led to debates over social issues such as abortion rights and same sex marriage which have divided opinion among Portuguese citizens. Despite this there remains a strong commitment to democracy in Portugal with free elections held regularly for both local councils and national governments.
