Norway is a parliamentary constitutional monarchy located in Northern Europe, and is a founding member of the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) and the European Economic Area (EEA). The Norwegian government is divided into three branches: legislative, executive, and judicial. The legislative branch consists of the unicameral Parliament, or Stortinget, which has 169 members elected by popular vote every four years. The executive branch is headed by the Prime Minister and his cabinet, who are responsible for proposing legislation to Parliament and implementing laws passed by it. Norway's judicial system consists of district courts, appeals courts, and a Supreme Court. Norway has been an active participant in international politics since joining NATO in 1949; it also participates in various UN organizations such as the United Nations Security Council and UNESCO.
