Gela Collection

Gela is a city located in the province of Caltanissetta, Sicily, Italy, and is situated on the south coast of Sicily, about halfway between Agrigento and Syracuse. A long history dating back to 688 BC when it was founded by Greek settlers from Rhodes and Crete. The city flourished under Greek rule until it was conquered by the Romans in 211 BC. During Roman times, Gela became an important port for trade between Rome and Africa. In the Middle Ages, Gela was ruled by various Arab dynasties before becoming part of the Kingdom of Sicily in 1282.
