An imature indri (Indri indri) in eastern Madagascar

An imature indri (Indri indri) in eastern Madagascar. The Indri are Madagscars largest lemur, standing about a metre high, with a barely visible tail. Looking more like a panda than a lemur, they propel themselves through the air with their immensely powerful back legs. Indris communicate with each other with a piercing, high-pitched wailing sound. They have three calls: one for communication, one for danger and one for courtship or mating. They live in groups of between three and five. Each group ranges over 32 hectares of forest, eating no less than 40 different types of leaves and foliage a day. No indris have ever survived in captivity. Lemurs belong to a group of primates called the prosimians, meaning before monkeys. Everywhere in the world except Madagascar, monkeys replaced them 35 million years ago. Madagascar has outstanding biodiversity; most of its flora and fauna is unique to the island and can be found nowhere else

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of an immature indri, a remarkable lemur species found in eastern Madagascar. Standing at an impressive meter high, with its barely visible tail, the indri resembles more of a panda than a typical lemur. Its immense power lies within its back legs, which allow it to gracefully propel through the air. Indris communicate with one another using piercing and high-pitched wailing sounds. They possess three distinct calls: one for communication purposes, another to signal danger, and the last for courtship or mating rituals. These fascinating creatures live in small groups ranging from three to five individuals. Covering vast territories spanning 32 hectares of forested land, indris have a diverse diet consisting of over 40 different types of leaves and foliage each day. Despite efforts made by humans, no indris have ever successfully survived in captivity. Lemurs belong to a group called prosimians that predates monkeys by approximately 35 million years; however, they only exist naturally on the island of Madagascar. This unique island boasts exceptional biodiversity as most of its flora and fauna cannot be found anywhere else on Earth. Immerse yourself in this stunning image capturing the beauty and wonderment of nature's creations - an immature indri thriving amidst Madagascar's lush forests.
